Memory works by association

The practical rule: never memorize a naked fact. 'Benzene has 6 carbons' is forgettable; 'a hexagon of 6 angry carbon bees' is not. Weird, emotional, moving, funny images stick best — the brain flags novelty and ignores beige. And connections compound: a fact linked to three other facts survives three different retrieval routes, which is why techniques that link (palaces, stories, pegs) outperform raw repetition.

Mnemonics: acronyms and acrostics

Two upgrades make them stickier: make your own rather than borrowing (the act of creating is itself elaborative encoding), and make them weird or personal — your acronym for the causes of WWI will outlast any textbook's, precisely because it's yours.

Most students recall a self-made acrostic a week later with zero review — that's the power of having built it yourself.
The memory palace (method of loci)
The memory palace exploits your brain's superpower: spatial memory. Pick a place you know cold — your room, your walk to school, your kitchen. Define a fixed route through it with 5-10 stations (door, desk, bed, shelf...). Then place one vivid image per station for each item you're memorizing, walking the route in order. To recall, mentally walk the route and look at each station.
It works because evolution made remembering places a survival skill — you never forget where the stairs are. Binding abstract facts to those rock-solid spatial memories gives them the same durability. Build it in three passes: first walk the route and fix the stations, then place exaggerated interactive images (a giant mitochondrion burning toast on your desk), then rehearse the walk twice. Chunking is also how experts see boards, fields and sheet music: not more memory, bigger chunks.
Visualization is chunking's partner: turn concepts into pictures and processes into mental movies. For the water cycle, actually picture a droplet's journey. For anatomy, trace blood flow like a map route. Draw it badly on paper — the drawing, not the artistry, is the encoding. Then marry all of these to spaced repetition: a palace or acrostic built once still needs a review tomorrow and next week to become permanent. Techniques get it IN; spacing keeps it IN.
