What a cell is (and why it matters)
A cell is the smallest thing that is alive — the basic unit of every organism on Earth. You are made of roughly 30 trillion of them. Anything smaller than a cell, like a virus or a protein, is not alive on its own, which is why the cell is biology's fundamental unit.
Every cell does the same core jobs: take in nutrients and energy, get rid of waste, respond to its environment, and grow or divide. Whether it's a bacterium or a brain cell, that to-do list never changes. Learn those jobs once and every organelle makes sense as a department that handles one task.

The organelle tour: what each part does

Cells come in two architectural styles. Prokaryotic cells (bacteria and archaea) are small and simple, with no nucleus — their DNA floats free in the cytoplasm. Eukaryotic cells (animals, plants, fungi, protists) are larger, keep their DNA inside a membrane-bound nucleus, and have organelles doing specialized jobs.
